	James Madison once stated that, "A popular Government without popular information or the means of acquiring it, is but a Prologue to a Farce or a Tragedy or perhaps both. Knowledge will forever govern ignorance, and a people who mean to be their own Governors, must arm themselves with the power knowledge gives."

Madison's words are more applicable now than ever, as the American mass media system is comprised of corporations driven by a need for profits, advertising revenue and viewer ratings, who are NOT producing the type of "popular information" neccessary for an informed citizenry, "who mean to be their own Governers."

The Internet has the potential to help democratize the American mass media environment, but only if we are willing to utilize the alternative media sources that the Internet has made easier both to produce and read.
