About the Alternative Media Gateway

Mission:
The mission of the Alternative Media Gateway is to challenge the dominance of
profit-driven corporate media giants and increase awareness of high quality
alternative news sources that serve the public interest.
Background:
The American mass media system is in a state of crisis, as the ownership of
media is concentrated in the hands of increasingly few profit-driven
media conglomerates. The Federal Communications Commission has eagerly
facilitated the voracious expansion of these media empires, claiming that, "We
must place our faith in entrepreneurs and not extinguish the burning energy of
innovation with the wet blanket of over-regulation, as some seem to prefer."
[see full speech]
Unfortunately mass media deregulation has resulted in an American media system
that no longer is able to serve the public interest. Mainstream corporate media
outlets are more concerned with stockholder profits, advertising revenues and
viewer ratings than they are with fulfilling the public interest obligations
that the law bestows upon them.
The purpose of the Alternative Media Gateway is to help realize the Internet's
full potential to democratize the American mass media landscape. The online
mass media environment has yet to live up to its hype as the silver bullet that
will pierce the heart of the corporate media colossus. Instead it is dominated
by traditional, mainstream, profit-driven news sources whose preexisting media
content and name recognition, coupled with vast economic resources have allowed
them to stunt the growth and influence of alternative media sources.
